Why Do Flashes Continue After Pvd is Complete

Do flashes of light continue after an FOV?

These flashes are vitreous tugging on the retina stimulating it. Hence why see see disorganized light. A good FOV, PVD induced or not, removes a lot of
vitreous near the retina. Does it also remove some of the strands that want to come off or not? Or does that get at the heart of the debate to induce a PVD?

I still experience flashes after my FOV. they are less apparent now. yes they do remove the strands, though some may remain. i have a floating strand at the
bottom of my eye. i am not bothered by it though. induced PVD is the most effective when it comes to removing central floaters and future ones. however,
      peripheral floaters may still occur.

        Hello Peacenik,

As soon as I first got floaters I experienced flashing at least a couple of times a week. (I have always experienced this a little bit if I have been tired
in the past). What is surprising though is, since my operation I have only experienced flashing in the operated eye about 3 or 4 times. It did it for about 10
seconds a couple of hours after the operation and on another 2 or 3 occasions since. The last time was for about 2 seconds yesterday morning as I was getting
out of bed. In contrast, my non operated eye has experienced flashing at least 2 or 3 times more than the other. This leads me to believe that having floaters
(and a crappy vitreous wall) puts quite a strain on the retina and could possibly lead to tearing or a detachment anyway.

I've always wondered if getting a FOV (PVD induced or not) adds stability back to the eye and actually reduces the risk of a FT/TD later in life since the
vitreous is now firm and will no break down again.

Chris/Paul - have you guys asked Dr. Patel that or do you have any information that may support or shoot down what I said above?

Hi Cabinman, this is one of the questions I had written down to ask Dr Patel when I see him Monday. I do believe you are right though. Bits of vitreous hanging
and breaking off has to be tugging at the retina to a certain degree. I am sure that anyone with floaters, especially people who are continually getting new
ones are at some kind of risk of a retinal tear. Once natural or induced PVD has occurred this should no longer be such an issue in theory.

              Cabinman

Mr Patel said that the remaining vitreous will stop tugging on the retina once the frill resettles itself which may take up to a year. once the flashes stop
then the frill should have resettled. for induced PVD eyes RD and retinal tears are no longer an issue since PVD is the main cause of these problems.

              Paul

the fact that you had flashes during your floater period would indicate that natural PVD was occuring in your eye. any flashes in the other eye?

                Loughrey and Paul:

What about sparkles? Dots jumping around when looking at a bright surface? Pre-FOV? After FOV?

                  Aug 07, 2009 #8

Am I the only one there who doesn't experience this kind of artifacts (flashes, sparkles, etc.) ?

                    kalleanka

no, i never had a sparkle effect. only line flashes moving half way around the eye.

                    Bitchou

                    you must be!

So strange. I wonder why we see these sparkles then, maybe it's just that some people have a more sensitive retina/apparant white blood cells. Or could it
maybe be connected with the size of the eye? Retina is closer to the lens in small eyes, and hence the mirroring of the blood cells gets more apparant. Lol, i
                      don't have a clue.
